There are three blocks each morning. For students in the Soccer Academy, classes begin at 8:30 a.m. Students participate in the Soccer Academy in block rotation 4.
Planning 10 Mandatory Students, at the Grade 10 level, must complete the mandatory Planning 10 course requirement. This course may form part of a student's overall timetable of course selections in the mornings, or a student has the option of completing the course on-line via correspondence or at summer school. Sentinel counsellors review each student's timetable and recommend accordingly.
Additional Academic Credits For Students All students in the Sentinel Soccer Academy receive credits for Physical Education. Similar to all other students at Sentinel, students in Grades 8 & 9 receive credits for Health & Career Education. However, students in Grades 10, 11 & 12 also receive credits on their transcripts each year for our locally developed Board Authority Authorized (BAA) Courses:Theory & Principles of Soccer 10, 11 & 12.
National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP)
We offer students (Grades 10, 11 & 12) the opportunity to participate in the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) which is recognized as one of the best coaching certification programs in the world. Each of the three progressive levels consists of three parts: THEORY or Sport Science is generic to all sports; TECHNICAL is specific to each sport; and PRACTICAL which requires one full season of coaching.
The first two levels of the Theory have recently been rewritten and are called Part A & Part B. The modules in the two programs are:
A: Introduction to Coaching
Making Decisions Planning a Practice Nutrition
B. Teaching and Learning Designing a Basic Sport Program (Season Plan) Basic Mental Skills
The value for students is threefold: (1) The course enables students to further their understanding of sport science principles, which are the foundation of performance in all sports, thus assisting their own sport performance. (2) Students who pass the course are able to coach a school or community team and (3) Upon successful completion, students may obtain credit for the course from the Provincial Ministry of Education as an additional career program course.
This year, the course will be offered to students (Grades 10-12)beginning February, 2010. Students receive a certificate upon successful completion and results sent on to the Coaching Association of Canada to be entered in the National Database.
Assessment & Evaluation
Skills and Fitness Assessment Students’ skill levels and fitness levels are continually monitored. Formal assessment is conducted at the beginning of the school year and then just prior to the conclusion of the students' soccer season. Students participate in a series of on-field and off-field test items with results documented in formal reports to students and parents.
We emphasize to our students the importance of forming good habits for success, not only in soccer, but also in school and in their relationships with others. Students are encouraged to be consistent in areas such as: goalsetting, focus, work ethic, attitude and effort during both on-field and off-field sessions. Within the classroom component, students are monitored and assessed as they are encouraged to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key topics, submit quality class and homework assignments, display excellent overall effort and cooperate well with their peers. A formal soccer evaluation is written and included in each academic report card each of three terms.
