Messages include: taking responsibility for your life, defining your goals in sport and school, prioritizing and doing the most important things first, having an ‘everyone-can-win’ attitude, active listening, working together as a team, and taking care of yourself. Hockey skill development is important but teaching life strategies for our young teens is equally important.

National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Students in Grades 10, 11 & 12 have the opportunity to participate in the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) which is recognized as one of the best coaching certification programs in the world. Each of the three progressive levels consists of three parts: THEORY or Sport Science is generic to all sports; TECHNICAL is specific to each sport; and PRACTICAL requires one season of coaching.
The first two levels of the Theory have recently been rewritten and are now called Part A & Part B. The modules in the two programs are:
A: Introduction to Coaching Making Decisions Planning a Practice Nutrition
B. Teaching and Learning Designing a Basic Sport Program (Season Plan) Basic Mental Skills
The value for students is threefold: (1) The course will enable students to further their understanding of sport science principles, which are the foundation of performance in all sports, thus assisting their own sport performance. (2) Students who pass the course are able to coach a school or community team.(3) Upon successful completion, students may obtain credit for the course from the Provincial Ministry of Education as part of a career program.
The course will be offered to students (Grades 10-12) beginning February, 2010. The students, upon successful completion, have their results reported to the Coaching Association of Canada to be entered in the National Database.
